You know your weekend is bound for good things when it starts with a rainbow! For our anniversary we decided to visit Colmar, France for both the charming scenery as well as the great mountain biking throughout the Alsace region. We ended up mountain biking near Munster, France in the Vosges mountains about 30 minutes from Colmar.
We were up early, packed up our bikes and left Colmar driving towards Munster. We picked up some pastries at the grocery store right outside of Munster and we parked in the Munster train station (for free!) and proceeded on our bikes from there.
Planning with our Supertrail Map
Prior to our trip, Kelley purchased a map of the Vosges mountains online at supertrail-map.com. We were able to get a good idea of the area and plan out a potential ride that wouldn’t be too technically difficult for me. We also purchased the accompanying smartphone app which is great while your’e actually on the trail. GPS pin points your location on their trail map and when the MTB trails aren’t all marked, this is a life saver.
Our route looked a little like this once it was said and done:
- Distance: 12.9mi
- Moving Time: 3:22:22
- Elevation: 3,100ft
View on Strava here.
Most of the 3,000ft of climbing was done on dirt roads and there was a good bit of quality single track along the way. Unfortunately, my legs were so dead from the climbing that I could barely use them for the downhill ride back into Munster… so I mastered my “walk a bike” skills instead. Kelley had absolutely no issues with this ride and neither would any other decent MTBer. I’ve just got some practicing to do!
MTB in the Vosges Mountains
If you’re not wanting to spend money on a map, there are plenty of other resources online that will assist you in planning your MTB trip in the Vosges Mountains.
A couple suggestions are:
Where to eat in Munster, France
Like every other ride, we were absolutely starving by the time we finished. Considering it was 3pm and most places had already finished up for lunch, we were thrilled to run into this little gem.
- L’Abbaye d’Anny
- Address: 1 Cour de l’Abbaye, 68140 Munster, France
- Phone: +33 3 89 30 58 51
- Recommendations: Any of their desserts or crepes!
And of course, while you are in Munster, you had better buy some Munster cheese! Avoid the touristy shops in the Old town and head to the supermarket instead! Same quality and much cheaper!
